Private Blend: Blue Yunnan – Running Low
Price range: $1,250 through $3,995
Imagine the scent of resin-oozing king super wood drenched in blueberries, marinated in…
Private Blend: Hailam Kilam gives you the signature musk perfume with a unique Hainan oud distillation that in itself smells a touch musky, spicy, and above all… it interacts with all the musk power to create a kernel of orange sinensis that permeates the entire fragrance.
It’s exactly that characteristic Chinese oud pitch that fits so perfectly with all the musk and spices. I love how that orange sinensis kernel wafts out loud so much that I wanted to explore that facet even further.
Hailam Kilam is a dry, linear oud. It’s almost un-Hainan if you compare it to old-school Hainan ouds. It doesn’t have that feral bite that makes vintage Chinese ouds stand out so much, and so acts quite different in Private Blend compared to if you had used classic Chinese oud.
Enter Blue Yunnan.
Imagine the scent of resin-oozing king super wood drenched in blueberries, marinated in orange peel and topped with white carnations. That lush, ever-so-slightly sour grapefruit-cherry twang of vintage Yunnan, and Nha Trang kinam – in a single oil.
The result is an oud that’s bluer than Purple Kinam, more orange than the orange-peel feast that was Chinese Exclusive, polished with a myrrh sweetness that shines through kinamic wafts I’d only experienced previously in Nha Trang.
I’ve kept the ratio of this edition the same as that of PB: Hailam Kilam, so the quantity oud is the same in both. This lets you feast on the heart of Private Blend dripping with the cherry tobacco laced with orange peel you’d find in premium old Chinese oud and the smooth medicinal bitterness of a fine Guallam…… but the airy Malinau-esque woodiness? A motley of blueberries, carnations, pollen, and frankincense riding out PB’s waves of musk…
(In this edition, you’ll smell a musk duo made up of Tonkin and Siberian pods.)
We stopped selling Blue Yunnan mid-2021, so many have not had the chance to experience it neat. (Yunnan Royale is likely the only other oud from the same jungle you’d ever find, so if you want to get an oud to layer with a spritz, definitely get that.) The little BY I have left is almost nine years aged, so while I’m reluctantly using it, it’s SO WORTH IT!
Blue Yunnan’s unique notes were born from the soil running along the border that grew oud trees that don’t exist anywhere else – not in Hainan, Yunnan, or Nha Trang. And it smells blue… lush with China’s orange peel sinensis zest.
… a blue that swims in musk and Mysore, spiced up with Sichuan pepper and cumin, blackcurrant and jasmine Helichrysum in the heart, sweetened just enough with beeswax and castoreum – which, with that blueberry luban chord – makes this edition even more delectable.
Featured Testimonials…
Fruity & spicy musk-explosion at the start with just the right amount of animalic dirtiness, which reminds me of a more tamed version of Tibetan Musk regarding the animalic part, which reduces even further as the musk gets more balsamic & creamy alongside the sandalwood. The spices intertwine nicely with the musk & bring back a little darker depth, but without being too dominant with smoke or spiciness. The oud which this perfume was named after shows it‘s leathery, woody & especially fruity aspects more & more through time, like cooling berries, not too sweet, which really makes the general impression blue & even a little purple. The spices & especially the flowers are luckily only in the background, because this perfume is all about balsamic musk & fruity oud with a slight spiciness, which also makes this pretty wearable. A clash of cooling, fruity blue & sensual, spicy warmth : A successful addition to the Private Blend family (again) !
Reviews of Previous Editions…
Private Blend is my favorite musk fragrance. The sheer amount of musk blended in this perfume is unbelievable. There are some other notes who overall support the spicy musk note like sandalwood, rose, blackberry and jasmine but the overload of musk which hits your olfactory is pure joy to experience. One of the most unique perfumes in my collection and if I had to make a list of top three, this would be one of them.
UPDATE:
Most addictive musk fragrance I own and made all other musk perfumes obsolete to me. Private Blend shows exactly what artisan perfumery stands for: bold, unique, quality and the most rare materials to be used in perfume. Private Blend is still the benchmark musk fragrance to beat. I hope I get the chance to test all the other PB, including semi bespokes. Nevertheless which one you own, you can’t go wrong with this composition.
My first impressions are the musk opens up very strong and somewhat pissy, most likely due to the Siberian musk (great choice btw). But it won’t stay too musk for long as the Yunnan oud introduces itself very shortly afterwards.
Yunnan oud has a very blueberry pie sort of smell that does absolutely beautiful in holding down the [ammoniacal] notes from the Siberian musk.
In the end what you have is a dance between very animalic musk and a beautiful oud that compliments the very foundation of private blend which is musk.
Herbaceous – Musky – Sweet – Spicey – Serious Longevity – Deep Rich Qualities!
The last time I wore Private Blend, my body heat broadcast its performance radius and I noticed it drew the positive reaction from a woman on the train.
I could tell she was trying to figure out what was hitting her olfactory senses and drawing her in.
She actually moved about six inches closer, which is saying something on NYC MTA trains. I don’t think she recognized or figured out I was the source, but the effect of Private Blend was evident.
A common quote requently used in the operating room is “the enemy of good is better”. Ensar has definitely been able to elegantly walk that line with grace and sophistication. MashaAllah. Just when you thought you’ve smelled the pinnacle…
Ensar Oud, these are all absolutely unbelievable and another level. Private Blend is the most beautiful fragrance I have ever smelled, these are worth every dollar spent! I can’t wait for what’s next!
This is phenomenal. Love, love, love for me.
The apex of musk parfum has been set for the rest of human history.
EO Private blend is passion in a bottle. It blasts with the beauty of human life, it’s wars, it’s love, it’s compassion all at once like the brass section in a symphony reminding man “This is you, all of your light and darkness reduces to beauty”. As it cools and settles it’s as if you woke up from a dream and you realize you’re at a fragrant rosewood table with an angelic being cutting fruits and revealing gentle insights of our human nature. It would be unfair if this formula isn’t saved in a vault or taught.
I am holding my bottle in my hand at this very moment, and getting many compliments from friends, co workers and even strangers in a very short time.
Starts with an explosion of natural sweet smells, I’m picturing the sweetest blackberries and tea. Decadent. The sweetness is tamed early as the scent progresses, but remains throughout. And then. The second explosion: musk. It hits you hard, it demands presence. This perfume gives me feelings I have honestly never experienced before. It is sensual and animalistic, but unlike anything experienced in synthetic perfumes.
Private blend is amazing, the opening made me say “what’s this, where did I smell this fruit before, ah citrus passion fruit” I was still thinking this when a spicy glorious potent musk and some extremely clean tobacco, came on, then other notes that I have never smelled before. Now I understand why this Buddhist monk forced Ensar the man to sell his personal glorious private blend, but thanks is due to this monk that dared to hold on, and not let go of the first gem. This is a must have for musk and Oud lovers.
To be able to get a taste of the real deal is truly a blessing. There’s not a single dollar I have spent on Ensar Oud that I regret, everything is absolutely phenomenal.
As for the Private blend, I really like the opening which has a fresh herbal note. Followed by the candy like sweetness and the musk in the back ground which is present trough. I get a bit of pepper and spice as well. I put in on at 9am on my clothes. . Unfortunately I entered an Indian restaurant at 2pm and the scent almost completely disappeared. I’m not sure if it’s the effect of the strong spices. I will have to test it out again.
Doesn’t give that stomach bothering nauseating feeling like store bought perfume or cologne.
So far I have only tried a small spray of the private collection. I will need to try a couple more times before I can fully appreciate it. So far I find it very unique. Not what I expected. The musk is much milder than what i thought it would be and it settles to a sweet skin smell but not something unpleasant. A little bubble gum and spice.
I don’t have words to describe this EO Private blend, all I know that I love this EO Private blend so much I had to buy 2 more, the sweetness is so lovely.
I’ve never smelled musk this potent yet elegant and sensual. I want to smell like this all the time. It has a sweetness to it that entices and entangles the senses. Truly a work of art. Well Done.
Oh my word, now I know why this is the special jewel in your parfum crown. It transports you to your most special of times and firmly holds you right there, no confusion, no drama or hardship, simply in short sitting on a beach at night with your loved one’s looking at the stars of your achievements the joy that comes with it, then the breeze comes over. You guessed it private blend parfum. My fragrance friends the stars await.
I was very pleased wearing this perfume. This is a very special and exclusive perfume so that I’d like to wear it on a special occasion. The perfume takes time to change, and what a journey it is! In the beginning, it gave me a masculine profile with leather, tobacco, dried fruits, and fresh fruits such as plum. Then a beautiful rose started appearing, I could smell so many flowers… I think it is becoming more feminine after time. At some point, I found a similarity with legendary Chanel No.5, which I presented to my mom (neroli, ylang-ylang, peach, bergamot), but it was probably one of the reflections of the real nature of Private Blend. Later on, it has developed some woody accords (creamy Sandalwood, cedar) with flower touch (perhaps, Jasmine). In conclusion, it is a Great perfume! I am very glad that Mr Ensar made a decision of sharing this treasure with people. This is a real perfume craftmanship.
I finally have a Bottle of Private Blend. It’s everything I’ve imagined and more. It’s Magical. I’m so Happy ![]()
