Description

After the insane legwork leading up to the project, in late 2013 we started distilling the first oud in the Sultan Series: Sultan Murad

It’s the oud that put New Guinea oud on the map for good. For the first time, you could dive into the aquamarine waters of oud so beautifully herbaceous, so therapeutic, so virgin jungle aboriginal that I deeply regret not having spared even a single drop for myself – each of the Sultan Series ouds was extremely limited.

Crafting a perfume around that virgin New Guinea aquamarine aroma had been on my mind for years. Oud Sultan Murad was practically a perfume unto itself, so you can’t escape the question: What if I could create a spray rendition?

As everyone knows, quality New Guinea ouds are exceptionally rare. Any New Guinea oud, for that matter. The wood was difficult and expensive to acquire a decade ago, and we’ve tried hard in the following years to get the same grade and undertake more such distillations, but to no avail.

What we did do with the precious New Guinea harvests we had was to turn them into the pinnacle of the profile, i.e. distill them Oriscent style. The result gives you an oud that takes all the hard work and logistical nightmares of distilling a quality New Guinea and – intensifies it exponentially!

Port Moresby doesn’t just give the fragrance a piercing, green kinamic quality, but I can’t think of an oud that would better suit the cool-green herbaceous profile, punctuated by capsicum, water lilies, apple and rose, and oud galore.

It’s not just its scent that’s unique in the oud world, even the resin formation is so unique they’re among the most prized possessions in the EO archive. For example, I’ve been holding these Port Moresby pieces for years:

Nobody transports incense-grade New Guinea filarias by hand from way down under all the way up to Taiwan. Nobody spends two months distilling that wood according to parameters nobody else knows about…

I could go on, but it’s not about the Herculean effort it took to distill the peerless Port Moresby, but the result is that you now have the chance to smell how, from first sniff to the last flicker of it on your skin the next day, Port Moresby unfolds its green kyara heart. There is no development. Just pure radiance. Dancing stillness. No great first note that then becomes another thing and then something else. Just pure kyara-green, like the smoke.

Now, take that piercing kinamic green and deck it out with caraway, thicken it with beeswax, and florify the oud with violets.

Port Moresby is part of a Papuan Trio that makes up over 30% of the composition (in case you thought I’m only using oud as a buzzword), which not only gives you an authentic NG oud aroma, but is a strong enough chord to impact the accompanying aromatics.

It’s a challenge to find, and especially to compose a ‘fresh’ frag that’s also got plenty of body. Fresh notes are typically fleeting, which is why mainstream perfumes have to compensate with synthetic carriers and fixatives to let them linger, which in turn kills their natural freshness and leaves you with a drydown you can’t wait to wash off.

Sultan Murad is beautifully crisp, fresh green – yet thick and lush thanks to the oud that’s present in the very first notes. Violet, blue lotus and tuberose are all also ‘thick’, robust, and creamy florals that add to the density of the cooling oceanic New Guinea fragrance.

With plenty of musk and ambergris to fix the brew and add lift, you’ll enjoy the peppered mandarin freshness continuously, while that sensual kyara-infused New Guinea glaze works its crystalline magic to soothe you with wafts of that fusion’s narcotique through the day.

Featured Testimonials…

I was nervous to do a review on this fragrance given the prestige of this house. I wasn’t concerned with how Ensar Oud would respond to the review, I was more concerned with ensuring I touched upon everything I could touch upon to provide an accurate representation to the end user who will end up purchasing either this fragrance or any others in the near future. As this is one of my first reviews in this space, I made sure to wear Sultan Murad twice, meticulously crafting notes through any changes, any nuances that I newly discovered, and any experiences that resonated with me. Sultan Murad is an experience in itself. Ensar Oud captures the green kinetic energy very accurately in the opening, and as the fragrance shifts towards the dry down, you feel the energy transferring from Green to Blue. Check out the review for my in-depth experience and please let me know your experiences with this fragrance.

Shipment received on record time, and three days prior to the estimated date. An expected yet marvelous feat befitting EnsarOud customer service.

The package came with a number of precious gifts from samples of currently on sale perfumes to a compact Habana Amber spritzer that smells enchanting like a young maid dancing in the middle of the ocean with the sperm whales on whose back are small islands furnished with spice producing plants and a caramelous vibe that reminds me of the caramel and cream topped hot chocolate I used to drink in winter Jeddan mornings. This is a perfume I recommend to the young and daring.

Now, the axis of my package is the now running low Sultan Murad perfume. This is a green beast I have been patiently sniping for the last ten or so months to get a hold of it. It is a zesty, lemon skin mixed – airy scent with a sprinkle of clove hidden in it. Herbaceous at the top, yet green and kinamic. An elusive sweetness ensues and that ever sought after,  kyara note keeps teasing me in the back ground. I never managed a nasal clutch of this ethereal and softly sour minty note since I got the privilege of knowing about kyara 15 years ago (thanks to Ensar sifu, of course). It intermittently alludes my attention to it until it lures me into a rose laden- garden where it frolics delightfully with them. As the sun sits, the kinamic notes bids me a farewell with a majestic oudy symphony in a musky hall of olfactory conclusion. Though the scent lasts a long while, which only took me a single spray to wallow in a dignified scentalicious chalet, I instantly yearn for another shot, though I feared losing it for all eternity.

Sultan Murad is a legendary expression of Kyara/Kynam done the Osmanli way. I am blessed.

When Ensar calls something with Sultan in the name, you can just blindbuy it. Sultan Red Rose, Chypre Sultan, Santal Sultan and so on are all unique and some of the best artisanal fragrance you can add to your collection. Today I want to introduce Sultan Murad: Port Moresby.

I would describe Sultan Murad as a shimmering opal, the plaque with turquoise color fits it so well. An aquatic fresh lingering smell, waves crushing against the green jungle, the beginning of a storm, roses and lilies all over the place and strong kinamic ouds piercing through your soul. In the end the shimmering opal get hits by moonlight, breaking into different colors, green, blue, turquoise, describing Sultan Murad.

The Sultan has entered the room!

This might be one of the best oud centered perfumes that has entered my collection. Dark & green waves of Papuan oud, wafts of cooling and herbal green notes give you a next level Zen-scent. The choice of florals in this perfume was made perfectly, everything blends in beautifully with each other and I can’t wait to experience this smell after it has macerated for a while.

I’ve had very high expectations for this perfume and they were surpassed. Sultan Murad is a perfume for real oud lovers and specially the ones who like Papuan oud.

Perfect for the colder days of the year, very powerful and quite an extraordinaire scent profile.

I’m just wondering why the name has been changed from Sultan Murad: Port Moresby to Sultan Murad?

I think it’s quite a nice touch if you would add the name of the Oud which is the big star of the show on the plaque.

The scent that made me fall in love with Papua ouds…

A beautfiul Blend filled with aquamarine notes, green and earthy notes of Papua oud and a sweet touch of florals.

Sultan Murad is easy to wear for every occasion, super complex and in my opinion the perfect scent for a relaxed evening.

A dream of green Papuan oud with aquamarine notes… a stunning blend, very dense and rich.

Pitch black juice with a blue and green core full of complexity and satisfaction.

Sultan Murad must be the most oud centric composition I’ve encountered from EO.

It wears very close to the pure Papuan oud profile!

It reminds me of Xiang Liao Ling almost. Has that premium leather, wet stone, mineral and darker jungle like profile.

This is the one perfume I would recommend for oud heads! Even more than Oud SQ parfum!

A true puritan oud perfume!

The Sultan has arrived! First impression after 15 minutes, it is a very complex well balanced and rich scent. To my nose and without looking at the notes, it is oudy, aquatic, green, slightly toothpasty. Based on the other reviews, it was said to be one of the most oud centric EO and I was afraid that it could be too animalic and unwearable. I find it very wearable. It is pleasant and sophisticated. I can’t wait to give it a full wear!

Very unique… like a mist of oud in a room…

Imagine trekking into the dense jungles of Papua New Guinea, not far from where the forest meets the sandy, kelp spotted shoreline. Your machete forges a path through the vegetation leaving a bitter, menthol-peppery, green sap on the blade as well as your clothes. The salty, algae rich scent of fresh seawater and vegetal greenness is augmented and eventually overtaken by the intoxicating scent of deep, ancient woodiness. You inhale deeply nature’s bounty and your eyes roll back in your head. Your nose is overwhelmed by a familiar kinamic prickle. Your mind is swimming with swirling colors of aquamarine and deep forest green. You are at one with nature.

Zenlike.

I first experienced this fragrance with immense joy, and over the past weeks, I’ve had time to reflect on its depth as it has matured and revealed its true essence.

From the initial spray, a burst of freshness transports you to a lush green forest in the height of spring, evoking images of a crisp spring morning in Muskoka (a scene my fellow Canadians will recognize). As the fragrance unfolds, the Papuan Oud emerges gracefully, weaving through the verdant tones like rays of sunlight breaking through clouds. The green elements seamlessly blend with serene shades of blue, while an underlying dry wood and herbal nuance—reminiscent of rosemary—grounds the composition in harmony.

I resonate deeply with Chris and Mudar’s description of this fragrance as “Zen-like.” It exudes a tranquil and meditative quality, offering a sense of balance and peace. As the scent evolves, it dries down to a subtly sweet yet earthy base, with the oud ever-present, grounding the composition beautifully.

This is a fragrance for cooler weather but also shines on a cool spring morning. It carries an air of calmness that lingers, offering both serenity and sophistication for the journey ahead. Sultan Murad is truly a masterful creation—a scent that feels like a spiritual embrace.
