EO 3: Royal Taifi
$3,150
Forty-year-old Taifi rose doubled down on itself, Japanese otto and absolute underneath, shot through with…
I shouldn’t be making this.
Royal Ta’ifi is not a rare oil. Rare implies you might find more. I’m talking about a flask that contains the Sultan’s private Taifi extract, sealed with wax for forty years, and the only direction its level moves is down. Every composition it touches brings the chapter closer to shut. One day I’ll tilt that flask and nothing will come out, and the finest rose oil ever distilled will exist only in the memories of the people who wore it.
This edition pours 2 grams per bottle toward that day – on top of what was already poured into EO3.
EO No. 3 you know: “The Rose-Oud Throne”. Ta’ifi rose ottos from Sultan Qaboos’ private estate, vintage Myitkyina oud you can’t distill today for love or money, and the pheromonal trifecta of Mongolian, Tonkin and Tibetan musk. This edition takes that finished composition and enriches it with four of the distinct facets – not drops, grams:
2 g Royal Ta’ifi. Sixty thousand roses picked at dawn for a single ounce of oil, then aged four decades until the petals took on that golden, lubani-sweet veneer no fresh harvest can fake. No. 3 was already a tribute to this rose. Now it’s drenched in it – the rose oozes thicker through the opening and holds deeper into the drydown, because there’s twice as much of it in the bottle.
1 g Enso. The undiluted kernel of Enchanted Rose – Japanese rose otto and absolute, more Royal Ta’ifi, 80s Burmese oud, three-decades-old Malaysian Tigerwood. Plus everything that made Enso impossible to put down: pear shot into a vein of saffron, wafts of black tea, beeswax lending a jammy pollen sweetness, castoreum turning it all diffusive – petals and oud smoke. This is what gives the edition its texture: the thick, close-to-skin quality of a neat attar, now inside a spray.
1.5 g Zestina. I bet you didn’t expect this one. The brightness. Apricot and plum, ripe and dripping, sliding off freesia stems into magnolia, glazed with tangy fruit. Where the original No. 3 whispered pear and pineapple, this one bites into them. It’s what keeps all those vintage giants playful – the top now opens with juicy and citric-floral chords before the rose takes over.
1 g Kyara Ko-Twe III. In the base, a gram of golden kyara with that tangy, resinous, old-Hong-Kong edge – the apex of traditional oud, from a distillation so scarce we sold it by the gram as a collector’s piece. It flows under the olde Myitkyina and darkens it: more resin, more bite, a kinamic tang the original base never had.
The Sultani signature is intact: those rich, liqueur-heavy rose-oud wafts that smell of another time. But this is No. 3 the way a ghalia master would have finished it – lush fruit at the edges, a zestier top, an attar’s density through the heart, and a kyara-deepened base… all while the rich, liqueur-heavy rose-oud wafts around everywhere.
