Santal Royale: Royal Guallam

There’s no oud quite like Royal Guallam. It’s a one-note whiff of bitter medicinal Vietnamese agarwood.

There’s just something about Santal Royale that screams to be joined by that bitter medicinal Indochinese core – that’s why I also went with Royal Kinam previously. 

Both Royal Kinam and Royal Guallam inject a shot of red, gently bitter kinam into Santal Royale’s signature creamy heart of the finest Mysores, and reddening its red spicy musky glaze that puts it in a league of its own.

Here’s where there’s a big difference between RK and RG: Royal Kinam imbues the perfume with a sharp kinamic bite. Royal Guallam is a lot more mellow. Bitter and medicinal, no doubt, but there are degrees to which sinensis ouds project these facets. And, as you could have guessed… mellow is Mysore’s middle name! 

But it’s not about making a sandalwood perfume more mellow – you don’t use a kinamic Oriscent oud to mellow a fragrance! Rather, Royal Guallam is the perfect oud to redden the inherent spicy red heartwood aroma of Santal Royale without transforming it into a different profile.

I say transform because when you add a full 3 grams of anything to a perfume it’s bound to have an impact. The impact of adding 3 grams of Royal Guallam though…… it’s the perfect play on what makes Santal Royale such an incredible Mysore fragrance in the first place.
