EO 4: Sultan Mustafa

$2,899

Instead of next bringing you a house rendition of jasmine or vanilla or vetiver, I decided on…

Description

Sultan Mustafa is not a name we use lightly.

The original earned it – a steel-distilled Brunei and New Guinea co-distillation from our 2013/14 Sultan Series that became the benchmark for what this profile could be: dark, incense-centered, the blue-green oceanic depth of New Guinea adorned with the polished resinous core of Brunei. Steel distillation doesn’t amplify florals the way copper does – it strips them back and concentrates the resin, which means Sultan Mustafa hits with an incense weight and darkness that copper distillation simply doesn’t produce. We don’t revive a name in the Sultan Series unless what’s in the still justifies it.

Not a color or a metaphor. This is a specific, recognizable aromatic character that every serious collector knows the moment it hits – that oceanic, camphoraceous incense depth that only New Guinea agarwood of a certain grade produces when distilled correctly. Sultan Murad inaugurated it. Sultan Mustafa took it further. And once you’ve smelled it, you spend the rest of your oud life recognizing it, chasing it, and measuring everything else against it.

It’s gotten to me as a perfumer to the extent that I’ve changed my signature series line-up because of it…

For this edition, I totally revamped EO4, in the same way EO5 was overhauled to incorporate and showcase Sultan Ahmet – to make the composition revolve entirely around the oud itself.

So, instead of next bringing you a house rendition of jasmine or vanilla or vetiver, I decided on… that blue-green magic. And for this, I have Sultan Mustafa to thank. Creating a perfume that expressed the blue-green character of Sultan Mustafa as a full compositional statement – not as a base note or a finishing touch, but as the core profile – wasn’t only a challenge, but the nuanced way this oil behaves in a composition gave me new insights, and frankly, got me excited.

You can highlight the blue-green effect to different degrees – it’s both an effect and a smell.

The New Guinea component of the original Sultan Mustafa cost 6.6 times more than the wild New Guinea wood that went into Sultan Murad – itself considered by many a near-perfect distillation. The Brunei component was hand-selected and flown in specifically. You cannot get this character from lesser wood. You cannot replicate it with a different origin or a cheaper batch. The blue-green note is not a formula, but the direct aromatic consequence of a specific grade of wood, distilled in steel, by people who slept beside the pots to get it right.

To compose around it, you’d reach for aromatics that give it contrast and context – vanilla, tamarind, opoponax, peru balsam, anise or caraway, aromatics with a thick resinous sweetness like caramelized myrrh dipped in a paste of blended dates. These are dense, viscous materials that create the dark backdrop against which Sultan Mustafa’s blue-green incense character becomes visible. But they’re not what defines the composition…

A fine oud perfume doesn’t just contain oud. While this style of perfumery of using just one ingredient and diluting it has been a trend in modern perfumery the way showcasing one brushstroke of blue paint on a canvas and calling it art has become fashionable, that’s actually contra-perfumery…

Perfume aims to embellish and enrich certain aromatics; ornament and arrange them like a symphony would arrange different instruments, with perhaps a solo sax or piano performance as a highlight.

What would you have done with oud?

What would you have done with musk and rose?

What would you do with the blue-green note?

No 4 didn’t just set out to feature Sultan Mustafa, but to inject EO’s DNA into it. To take the blue-green incense character, the oceanic camphoraceous depth, the steel-distilled resinous darkness – and build an entire composition from it.

The resinous balsams give Sultan Mustafa’s incense something to cut through – its blue-green character drives into the vanillic sweetness and dries it out at the edges, sharpening the whole base into something incense-dark rather than sweet-dark.

When it comes to scent density vs. scent potency, a Sultan Mustafa composition will tend towards density over potency because of the class of aromatics required to frame it – balsams, resins, ouds… dense, not loud botanicals.

But add carnation to vanilla and davana to carob and marigold to hyraceum, mix mango with the sweetness of osmanthus, inject three full grams of Sultan Mustafa’s pristine blue-green incense into seaweed… and see what it does to the perfume’s lift and projection. And smell how they’re all woven into the blue-green note.

Reviews of the previous edition…

EO 4 is a rich and fizzy scent that feels both playful and deep. It has that cola-like spark, not just in smell but in the way it seems to bubble on your skin. Sweet, spicy, and slightly smoky, it’s smooth yet full of surprises. There’s a warmth underneath that makes it more than just a fun scent—it’s bold, addictive, and something you keep wanting to smell again.

I really feel like no.4 never got the spotlight it deserved. It had a bit of buzz at release then sort of faded to the shadows.

I love the sweet Cola amber vibe that it has. And the slightly green aromatic aspects of the composition really stand out to me.

To be honest in the beginning I didn’t get what all the cola talk was about. I could notice a slight Vanilla Coke aroma but not enough to convince me that it’s really resembling a cola smell. Now, after quite a long time, I’m getting a pungent cola note, a bit fizzy, purple, and somehow mysterious. It’s quite an interesting scent which is quite heavy on the basenotes for me.

I’m very glad that I’ve kept my bottle and didn’t choose to let it go.

Have a sip !!!! Sparkling Effervescent Cola EO4

Right off the bat, as the title says, it’s all about EO4; it is amazing how Ensar can create this scent profile with natural ingredients, and it’s also very hard to describe this scent in words.

To me, this is NOT a normal Coca-Cola, but rather a Diet Coke because Coca

Cola is all synthetic sweetness. I feel EO4 has light sweet vanilla syrup, which is good as I don’t like the vanilla sweet nor syrup taste.

Ensar quotes which are totally 100% true:

1/ “A sparkly, citrus soda effect, cola-fied in color.”
2/ “……medicinal bite that boasts loads of zest…”

There is something else going on with top and middle notes, but I can’t describe it, such as “add carnation to vanilla and davana to carob and marigold to hyraceum, mix mango with the sweetness of osmanthus, inject Green Papua’s incense into seaweed.”

Lastly, the Agarwood he chose for the base has a light and sensual touch, I guess it’s due to the mixture of Patchouli and Vanilla.

Not a strong bold oud here for sure, and I smell light airy of Ambergris on top of green soft minimal sweetness Agarwood.

My EO4 has finally arrived I sprayed on the scent and let it sink in for a long time.

The cola note, which I was really looking forward to, is very authentic here in this fragrance.

It’s not that typical synthetic cola scent that you know from some sweets or something, but really a very nice, serious, authentic cola note refined with nice flavors like vanilla and oud.

I get vanilla coke vibes here, which really appeals to me.

It also has a certain fresh, sparkling breeze that rounds off the composition nicely. It’s super balanced.

I like that it’s not too sweet so it’s more elegant.

The cola note fades further into the background over time, but doesn’t disappear. It blends more into the whole composition and becomes a part of it.

The drydown is legendary, where the pleasant oud takes its place.

Everyone should try the scent at least once. Delicious!

SOTD: EO No.4Happy New Year everyone! Best way to start the new year off is with a new EO series fragrance. My first impressions of EO No.4; a beautiful happy composition. The dry down on this drips with a purple oudy profile that smells amazing. Those top notes on first application zing with a sparkly orange cola ambergris accord but there’s so much more going on here. It’s hard for me to describe. I’m not very familiar with cola, so experiencing the fizz mingling throughout this composition is refreshing. I pick up on the vanilla carob as well. The vanilla is very smooth. A lovely bubbly gourmand of sorts.

Like the worlds best cream sickle. Once the complex top notes fade and the heart begins to shine through -it becomes my favorite part of the fragrance. The florals are just beautiful and the Rose Otto really shines along with the jasmine. From here on out the cola just pays a beautiful tribute to the amazing ouds and florals effervescing among the rounded vanilla tobacco and ambergris. This is an uplifting fragrance with such a happy profile. I find it easy to wear on any occasion, during any time of year.

Definitely a unisex fragrance. I can see how many people might want to ware it during the spring or summer. It’s not a monster but has excellent projection. I’d say just the right amount. Also, it lasts for about 6-8 hours on my skin during this cold winter season. Maybe even 10hrs depending on how active I am. But let me just reiterate. The dry down is such a fantastic skin scent. The vanilla floral purple oud with the remaining hints of cola are so appealing. A fantastic addition to the EO line up. Really looking forward to the different iterations that will come out of this in the future. Amazing job Ensar Oud and team! Happy new year to you all.
