Unless you’ve experienced fine, artisanal Sumatran oud before, you’re about to…

Description

Most Sumatran ouds smell like wet towels left in the laundry basket – damp, earthy, almost suffocating.

Yet, this raw moisture is rooted in the island’s lush, jungle-thick agarwood, which seeps through its fibers and solidifies into resin that hides an olfactory pearl ready to be cracked open.

That’s the challenge of unlocking Sumatra’s raw potential: extracting that humid soul and transforming its untamed wetness into an exotic, super clean, crisp, piercing blue pitch with a ripe, plum-like fruitiness that, compared to any other oud jungle, stands out like pink in a blue room.

Revealing the beauty dormant deep inside Sumatran resin has always taken skill, for several reasons – not the least of which is the notoriously low yield. You have to spend long months gathering enough incense-grade Malaccensis to distill… then make the tough call to pull the trigger and actually proceed with distillation.

It’s a hard decision because you could easily sell each and every oud chip to cash in, rather than grinding them all into dust and ending up with very little oud oil.

In this exceptionally rare batch, we’ve harnessed that signature Sumatran essence and coaxed out a chorus of concord grapes and violets. Experience an almost mentholic, carbonated pitch sweetened with agave nectar that makes each swipe irresistibly captivating.

Unless you’ve experienced fine, artisanal Sumatran oud before, you’re about to step into a whole new world. (And if you have smelled Sumatran oud, I bet you’ve read this far because you’ve already been enchanted by // or //  fallen in love with – this world’s dazzling flora.)

Unlike most Sumatran ouds, Samtura is a clean distillate. No muck, no swamp, no chemicals, or growth boosters – just pure incense and wood, naturally bursting with those grapey, violet, agave notes. Made from wild agarwood that didn’t need boosters or pesticides to deliver the real thing.

Pressed for a comparison, I’d say imagine the deep, resinous blue of Midnight Malaka mingling with the floral grace of Oud Mahmoud. Think of Myitkyina 1987’s thick, syrupy spice fused with the floral allure of tuberose – menthol-like yet not minty, reminiscent of fresh, rainy morning air. Earthy and evocative, it combines oud vapor, wet stone, and molasses with a creamy, resinous tuberose finish.

We didn’t make much. We couldn’t. The raw materials were too rare, the process too demanding. Every Sumatran micro-batch we’ve offered has sold out fast. This one will, too.
