Distilled in 2011 (the same year as Purple Kinam), Oud Royale II is the first Oriscent Filipino ouds ever made. When it was released a decade ago, oud lovers didn’t even know that Filipino oud existed…

Years ago, I had sold the last of what we had to a single collector. Years later, and much the wiser, I bought it back from him.

Knowing what I know now about Filipino oud (and the oud scene at large), I would have kept more of it – and would certainly not have sold any of it at that point.

Violet is the word I was looking for. While violet leaf absolute smells like cucumbers, rather than proper violets, Filipino Oud oil offers a closer approximation to the narcotic scent of the flower itself.

Its bold embracing taste of naked earth just after an early-morning drizzle epitomizes its uniqueness. Bolder than Borneo, cleaner than Cambodi, this Filipino personifies more than just a fragrant montage of her neighboring islands.

As I approach the vial, I am hit with a wonderful aroma that is at first spicy, and then beautifully sweet. As I remove the cap, the spicy note has fully transmuted into a luscious green sweetness, broad and full. I see orange and blue and green. The sweetness shifts as the lower notes of Oud Royale begin to reveal themselves. The aroma of suede lingers in its body and then transforms into an ethereal note that is so familiar. The mind struggles to identify the note, and is simultaneously silenced by its upward allure. Irresistible. Alas, after showing me its full splendor, the words return. Kyara Koutan. I smell Kyara Koutan. I unscrew the cap of my bottle of Kyara Koutan to confirm and yes, to my nose, Oud Royale shares a note with Kyara Koutan. It is that vaporous cool heavenly note that seems to contain so much it defies description. It is that irresistibly dynamic note that is the signature of the finest Oud oil. Moments later, and there is a subtle hint of tobacco mingling amidst the spicy-sweet-green-heavenly notes. As Oud Royale wears, the tobacco and suede notes become more assertive, and at times even dominant. And yet, even in its most full bodied moments, Royale never lets you forget the heavenly sweetness that is its aromatic heart.

Oud Royale opens with a liquored, airy brightness and dries down to a wintergreen-infused and tingly damp woodsiness. Notes of moist tobacco, vanilla, licorice and clean woods add warmth, depth and complexity to this unusual and intriguing diaphanous amalgam. One of the most mind blowingly deep ouds I have ever smelled. The depth of incense resin in this oil is incredible. When you wear this oil and breathe in deeply, it evokes to me the feeling of being in the middle of an Oud Resin ocean, it’s that deep and thick of a sweet resinous incense feeling.
