Description

When you smell it for the first time, you’re not sure – was your nose set up for a verdant ambush or is this the most soulful green zen you’ve ever smelled? Or both?

And where on Earth does this smell come from? It’s like you’ve stepped into a sonorous forest alive with petrichor… but not on this planet.

If you’ve never smelled the verve of green vetiver roots, then there’s a hole in your olfactory palette. An experience so lush and herbaceous, green Indian khus smells almost more full of life than lying nose down in a forest trail listening to the humm of the Earth.

Imagine that level of green; then picture those wild roots drenched in the aboriginal foliage of wild Papuan agarwood.

When we gave one of the attendees at the Hong Kong OudFest a spritz of Layers of Jade and then later a swipe of Green Papua to explain that this is the actual oud in the perfume, a light went on… “Ahhhh, yes, I can smell the perfume is full of this!”

Because Layers of Jade is a highly unusual perfume, the desire to keep sniffing it is dialed up a notch. What IS this? But it’s not just because of the scent’s uniqueness, but also because the vegetative oud-injected herbal pull is naturally inviting.

One attendee at the HK OudFest lost track of time with his nose stuck to the scent strip as if there was no one else around him. We literally had to snap him out of it!

Take the pure earthen artisanal oud of the greenest order that rides atop the vibrant vetiver and strap on the ethereal sweet wings of rose otto and smell the scent take off and quickly fill the room.

The green resinous tenor of Green Papua and vintage (23-years-old) Malaysian tigerwood oud is amped up further by tobacco leaf and then sweetened by plum and castoreum, all fizzing with the vitalizing spicy vigor of patchouli.

While Green Papua already features heavily in the composition, this edition contains an added gram of it (worth $185) on top of the finished compound to make the green oud incense permeate every crevice of the profile.

The result is green zen in a bottle.

Let me introduce everyone to the greener twin of Oud SQ, Layers of Jade.
Indeed, I find the oud in both to be very dark and earthly, however Layers of jade stands out in its own right.
The vetiver and Green Papua make it unique in its own right. Enough even to be called “green SQ Oud” but I think Layers of jade sounds better.
Now myself personally I’m not too big on vetiver, but Ensar Oud managed to take something like vetiver and make into one of my favourite fragrances. The vetiver is very clean and pleasing when mixed with oud, makes me want to buy another bottle. 😋

Guess what time it is? #june2023SOTD—-part of the expanding collection that came in today, LAYERS OF JADE!! This was one Jennifer was very excited to try. If any of you have ever read Lewis Carroll’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND, you know what a unique and colorful story it is. All the quirky characters that interact and harmonize to create this one of kind story make it something for everyone to enjoy.

That is what the LAYERS OF JADE is to us.

After a spray onto her hand, once sniff and we were transported to a different world. Literally, that first smell of peppery greenness started drying down into smoky and fruity invigorating scent. It soon settled into the wonderful world of that infamous Green Papua Oud that so many of us OUDDICTS love. Like Alice did in the story of Alice in Wonderland, you have to walk through that door and be transported to another world. Thats LAYERS OF JADE, at least according to Madame Oud, my wife haha.

Green themed perfumes from EO always attracted my interests and I already got some into my collection such as Qi Nan, Suriranka pp and this gem, Layer of Jade. I am going to wear Layer of Jade to sleep tonight. Its composition easily made me calm down.
A huge amount of smokiness comes to you firstly when spraying on skin. It is blending with a thick layer of woodiness and a touch of sourness. Blackcurrant and plum may contribute a bit on the slightly sour taste but to my nose, that is what the typical flavour of vintage Malaysian tigerwood 1990 is. The opening gave me a vibe of smelling charcoal roasted orange, juicy and fulfilled with smokiness. I am a big fan of smoky scents. Could you imagine how excited I am if a blind buy just fits your preference and habit?
A huge dose of greenish scents wrapping the thickest woodiness appeared in the middle. I would like to describe such kind of green feel as a lively, neither humid nor dry scent. It is like you smashed some emerald cypress and leave the juice to dry on your hand. You smell that residue and feel like you are digging into a forest. Everything surrounding you is alive, air is light and fresh, and you are far away from stress.
The prominent tobacco and Green Papua make up the powdery note from orris root and vetiver, and round the composition to be presented in a softer and balanced way when it dries down. Due to lack of animalic fixatives, the whole journey with Layer of Jade is smoothing, relaxing, not pungent, but gently healing me. It does give me a zen feel.
