Hailam

If I had one chance to answer the question: “What’s the most immaculate oud you’ve smelled in your career?” I’d answer, “A virgin swipe of Hailam”.

The degree of olfactory satisfaction you smell in this oud is bar none. Well, there’s the likes of Nha Trang or Hainan Kinam—but that’s because they’re in the same class of oud. In the ‘stranded on an island’ scenario, I’d count Hailam among the handful of bottles I’d take.

Normally when you talk about oud, the story ends with kinam. If you don’t know about kinam, the journey offers many pleasant distractions en route to the scent that puts an end to your search. But once you know, everything becomes a comparison.

Except when it comes to oud oil.

That’s how Hailam can be like kinam. But also BETTER than kinam. MORE than kinam. BEYOND kinam.

We’re not talking complexity here—the scent progression is quite linear. But it’s a scent that’s rich. Medicinal, cooling-blue, with an incense note akin to Nha Trang’s, but more bitter. A smell you can only capture by extracting the soul of the world’s most precious Chinese agarwood.

And a good distiller will approximate the scent of that agarwood, gently heated. But with our kyara Sifu at the helm, you smell more MORE than the scent of the oud wood they’re distilled from. When people cry out, lamenting how you distilled oud chips they’d rather enjoy raw, Hailam forgoes the regret as you bow your nose in gratitude for the fact that someone DID distill such wood—and made it smell even BETTER.

If you’ve smelled kinam, there’s still hope. The door to a higher scent is still open. But once you enter into a room with Nha Trang, Yunnan Kinam, and Hailam…… everything else becomes a comparison.

So, there’s good reason for me to discourage you from buying a bottle. If its resinous sinensis aroma does to you what it did to me, it’s game over. But if you’re curious to smell how deep the rabbit hole goes, Hailam’s boozy blue cool drags you down as deep as it goes.
