Most of Habib’s expertise lies under the hood.
Any of his apprentices over the years will tell you the same thing I’ve seen firsthand with the books he’s bound for me: he binds a book, then takes it apart because the tiniest detail wasn’t perfect. He’d begin to bind it again, only to start from scratch days later. If he’s not perfectly satisfied with his work, forget about it.
The strangest thing is that most of what he does is covered by the leather – the actual binding that holds the pages together is invisible – nobody would ever have noticed even the tiniest imperfection. But Habib knows…
The bookbinder’s job isn’t to make a book look pretty, but to make it last. Habib has told me that he binds a book for it to last generations. The fact that he also makes it look incredible is because his obsession spills over to every project he takes on. That’s why this edition here is bound with a very specific selection of full-grain calf hide imported from Italy – the same kind he made 1984’s pouches from.
So, despite it being a collectable, Habib made this mushaf to be used; to be read often. And he chose the more compact form factor so you can easily carry yours around during travels or daily commute.
