Iāve talked a lot about the emerging agarwood industry in places like Vietnam. A new breed of cultivated āwildā wood. The kind you can buy in shops on the main street or even at the airport.
Todayās bangles, mini-Buddha statues and incense all get made from this industrialized agarwood product. The uniformity of the resin, the typical look of the long strips sold in big bags. The smell. None of that has anything to do with wood like this.
These pieces are outer trimmings of super rare solid-resin Nha Trang agarwood bangleā¦ My Kyara Sifu in Taiwan wouldn’t let you touch wood like this for less than $1,500 a gram. He holds it as dear as Kynam, as it is indeed rarer and harder to come by, and so far as he’s concerned, it’s worth every bit as much.
The rarity ā let me rephrase that and say: impossibility ā of getting a hold of wood like this needs to be fully appreciated in order to be able to grasp exactly what it is that’s displayed before you here.
When heated, enjoy a bitter-spicy, semi-dry fragrance unique to Vietnamese agarwood, which makes for the perfect companion burn with a swipe of Nha Trang. (I also recommend Nha Trang Kyara to explore the depth of Vietnamese agarwood fully.)
