“Sultan Rose Attar” is one of my earliest attar compositions, built around only three aromatics: agarwood, sandalwood, and rose.
You probably know that often the less ingredients you use the better they have to be. That’s why Sultan Rose Attar has always used the most exquisite selection of oud, rose, and sandalwood I had at my disposal.
To create a spray perfume rendition of this acclaimed attar, I followed the same principle of minimalist beauty, but fleshed it out and gave it wings to perform like a spray perfume without sacrificing quality one bit.
Smell the subtle spicy edge of vintage Timor sandalwood atop a creamy layer of buttery Sri Lankan santalum ready to soak up an ensemble of oud. A wild Indian oud distillation to mirror the spicy-dry Timor santal hooked by the choco-like agar incense of a unique wild Sumatran distillation that tangos with rose like no other oud I’ve ever tried.
The ethereal diffusiveness of aged Indian ruh gulab, with its clear white pristine petal scent injected with Kazanlak otto and a touch of absolute to seep its full-bodied herbaceous tone into the oud.
This way, the ottos fly more on top (joined by tinge of Hojari frankincense to complement the lemony zest of a fine otto), while the redder absolute oozes into the tapestry of the austere oud duo for a priceless sweetened oud incense flowing in a mold of beautiful sandalwood.
This perfume is quite a sentimental release for me and for EO lovers because this is the final EO perfume released with the signature gold plaque.
EO’s “gold plaque” collection hacked through the walls of convention and axed the chains of mainstream conformity.
From the travel bans to importing madness to shortages (the custom-made plaques tripling in cost as a result) to the struggle getting anything done at all for a good stretch of time – it was during this worldwide mania that a gold plaque first adorned some of EO’s most iconic perfumes.
And Sultan Rose Attar is the seal of the collection. Smell how a velvety rose bouquet pops in a pool of sensual santal cream that splash about a resinous cloud of agar drops that bathes you in spritzes of an oud-rose-santal fragrance of a lifetime.

Tonight was a parade of roses! I was blessed to spend this wonderful night with my gorgeous wife Madame’ Oud, b.k.a. Jen, my beautiful daughter An and my future son-n-law Cal. Madame’ Oud was drenched in the combination of Sultan Rose Attar and Royal Ta’ifi.
That beautiful mixture of multiple roses, sandalwood and oud were enough to transport us to a place that felt like we were surrounded by the thousands of red and white rose petals that melted into the creaminess of the Timor sandalwood and that distinctive heaviness of the Indian oud.
And to top that off, Madame’ Oud blended in several drops of the Royal Ta’ifi into her hair and with every step she took or turn of her head, wafts of that rare, bright, sweet rose punched my olfactory senses like a jab from Mike Tyson, but the funny thing is, unlike a jab from Mike, I wanted more of that rose!!
The rose is jammy, without any citrus bite like Taifi, the Indo-China type oud has a slight bit of barn in the opening, but it’s inoffensive, it provide a good contrast to the rose profile. Overall the heart and base are thick and dense, with a heavy vintage and french-like vibe to it. I do prefer this release over EO3 for sure. ![]()
