I’ve always believed that great oud doesn’t need much around it. For Oud Nuh, I wanted to let two of the world’s most storied ouds carry the full weight of the composition – aged Meghalaya and vintage Malaysian malaccensis, each distinctive, each irreplaceable, together creating a scent that neither could be alone.
Your first swipe is like opening an old wooden chest – dry, dark, resinous. The Assam brings cured leather and timber blackened by decades of resin saturation. Malaysian malaccensis layers in a cinnamon-spiced warmth and a barely-there fermented quality, like the air in a room where something precious has been stored for too long. A thread of cade gives the first minutes a smoldering, almost tarry edge – not smoke exactly, more like heated wood beginning to carbonize. Hojari frankincense adds a cool, mineral note that cuts through the density and gives the profile a livelier feel.
This is not a crowd-pleaser. There’s no sweetness that projects all over so that everybody is forced to taste candy in the air. The opposite…
