There was nothing remotely like it at the time, and ever since…

Description

Malay Royale was hands-down one of the best ouds distilled the past twenty years.

It dates back to the same timeline as the original Oud Royale bloodline. It used the same caliber agarwood that went into the pots, but while Oud Royale was Maroke (i.e. Papuan), Malay Royale was the first West Malaysian oud I ever released.

There was nothing like it at the time, and the two West Malaysian ouds that followed in its wake (Oud Sultani & oud Ahmad) became two of the most acclaimed ouds in history

The comparison to Oud Royale is more about quality, not scent. Scent-wise, Maroke vs. West Malaysian ouds can be like comparing Thai and Borneo ouds. Oud Royale was syrupy black… Malay Royale was a mahogany tonic nobody ever encountered before. Instead of the terpy smokiness of Oud Royale, Malay Royale oozed waves of deep mohogany centennial resin.

But because they had the distillation style in common, Malay Royale possessed the darker, thicker tone of West Malayyus yet also shined with the surypy regal top notes of Oud Royale. It’s this best-of-both-worlds fusion that made it such a unique stunner.Ā

As a perfume, Malay Royale follows in the footsteps of Oud Royale – it was a perfume rendition of the finest oud oil you could ever point to. This is a rendition of the first and, to many, the greatest West Malaysian oud a nose could smell.

You probably missed out on a bottle because it sold out nearly two decades ago. But this isn’t just about capturing the scent of Malay Royale’s sublime incense, but using that profile around which to compose this perfume. To take that unique profile and adorn it with accessory notes to bring the scent of the oud to life.

Because this is a first and foremost an OUD perfume, we had to sacrifice two precious distillations: An exquisite West Malaysian plus a lush Kalimantan beauty that come together to mimic that golden mahagony tone. (Both wild-harvested and artisanally distilled.)

The opening kicks off with lush intensity: galbanum strikes first as it bites into juniper berries as tolu balsam slides in warm and sticky, thickening the wild Malaysian resin. Nutmeg adds some bite – not spice for its own sake (you won’t actually smell any nutmeg), but depth that resonates with the oil-rich fibers of high-altitude Malaysian malaccensis.

Golden apple drips from the top, falling into a bouquet of mimosa that laces through the composition as if penetrating hardening Malaysian resin twirling its way through a tall giant . Raspberry that’s gently tart runs parallel to the Malaysian’s chocolaty profile. Castoreum steps to add an edge of leather, reflecting the intensity of Malaysian oud’s animalic edges when distilled from older, centennial wood.

Yes, this frag will keep your nose busy!…… An hour in, you’d notice how jasmine sambac fuses with the oud to add a rainforest bloom effect, while angelica root adds a dry, fibrous tension that mimics aged oud chips snapping under heat. Iranian roses bleed into the composition with raw texture, never dominating, just drawing out the floral nuances buried deep in Malay oud’s core.

In Malay Royale, the oud isn’t just present – it’s everywhere. It shapes how the florals behave, how the spices pop, and how the entire perfume shifts from skin to air. The Malaysian ouds define the structure, tint the atmosphere, and close every loop. And just wait for the drydown… Ā there you’ll smell the oud truly assert itself; when the frag’s unmatched fingerprint comes clean.
